WHy AI Mastering is no match for the human ear
In the last few years, services like LANDR, eMastered and Waves online mastering have changed what's accessible to independent artists. Upload a mix, and within a minute or two, the software analyses its dynamics, frequency balance and stereo width, then builds a processing chain based on what it finds. Turnaround that would once have taken a human engineer hours or days now happens almost instantly, often for a fraction of the cost. For a demo, a quick reference master, or a high-volume release schedule where speed matters more than depth, that's a genuinely useful tool — there's no point pretending otherwise.
But "usable" and "great" are two different things, and the gap between them is exactly where a human engineer earns their place.
It can polish a mix — but it can't fix one
One of the most valuable things a mastering engineer does happens before any processing is applied at all: catching problems in the mix itself. Excessive low-end, harsh frequencies, phase issues, and a vocal sitting too low in the balance. An algorithm doesn't do that. It processes whatever it's given, for better or worse. If your mix has a problem, an AI master will polish straight over it rather than flag it.
It doesn't know what "warmer" means
This is the one that matters most. Working with a human engineer means an actual conversation — talking through the vision behind the track, pointing to reference songs, giving subjective notes like "make it feel warmer" or "give it more energy," and going through real revisions based on that feedback. "Can you make it feel a bit more open?" is a genuine note that leads to a genuine change in a human session. There's no one listening on the other end of an algorithm to give that note to.
Genre and character still cause problems.
AI mastering tends to perform best on music with steady, consistent dynamics — a lot of electronic and heavily produced pop falls into this category. It struggles more with acoustic, jazz and nuanced productions, where the character and texture of the original recording is the whole point. The result can come out technically correct but strangely flattened — clean, but missing the personality that made the recording worth releasing in the first place. That's not really a flaw in the technology; it's just what happens when a system is built for broad consistency rather than for the specific feel of one particular song.
Where the practical limits show up
A few things are worth knowing if you're weighing it up: most AI mastering tools only work on a finished stereo mix. If you want stems mastered individually, or any tailoring to a specific playback format like vinyl, that's still firmly human-engineer territory. And there's no real revision dialogue, just the option to tweak a setting and re-run the analysis, rather than a back-and-forth with someone who's actually listening and responding to what you're trying to achieve.
So, where does that leave AI mastering?
Genuinely useful for demos, reference mixes, and high-volume, lower-stakes releases where speed and cost matter more than depth of attention. But a human engineer brings a lifetime of musical and cultural context to a project — the ability to make creative choices that serve the emotional impact of a piece, not just its technical correctness. AI optimises against a dataset; a person creates through experience, conversation and genuine artistic intent.
For the releases that actually matter to you — the ones you've spent months on, the ones you want to feel exactly right — that difference is real, and it's audible.
